A comprehensive study on Espoo start-ups to be launched in August

21.8.2025 11.03

A start-up study will be launched in the Espoo region with the aim of collecting up-to-date information on the start-up ecosystem in the region. The study will map the current business status of companies, obstacles to and opportunities for growth, service needs and the views concerning the operating environment of Espoo from the perspective of start-up entrepreneurship.

Espoo aims to enhance the city’s attractiveness and international competitiveness as a location for establishing new undertakings and encouraging their growth. The start-up study supports this goal by providing a concrete knowledge base to back up the development of the city’s economic policy and services. The report will help to identify active start-ups and assess at what stage of development they are and their service needs and impact, including the size of business, employment capacity, growth rate, development of financing and internationalisation objectives.

The results and analysis of the study will be utilised for developing the city’s start-up ecosystem and business services.

“Espoo is known for its strong innovation and technology hub. Start-up entrepreneurship is a significant part of the region’s vitality. With this study, we want to obtain up-to-date information on the current status and needs of start-ups so that we can develop services and the operating environment to better meet the entrepreneurs’ expectations. It is important that we get direct information on what kind of support and operating environment undertakings need to help them grow. With the help of the study, we can identify development targets but also highlight the strengths of our ecosystem,” says Teemu Haapalehto, Director of Economic Development, City of Espoo.

Survey for start-ups as part of the study

A survey will be launched to support the start-up study. The data for it will be collected from August to October 2025. The survey is part of the City of Espoo’s long-term efforts to develop business services and accelerate the growth of start-ups.

“Our goal is to understand in more detail at what stage of development Espoo start-ups are and what kind of needs they have in terms of their need for growth and internationalisation. It is important to hear the views and experiences of companies and entrepreneurs directly from them. We encourage all start-ups and growth companies in the Espoo region to participate in the survey. The survey will provide a direct channel for influencing how we develop our business services and help us allocate our resources correctly,” says Heli Hidén, Senior Advisor, City of Espoo.

The study will be implemented by Crazy Town in cooperation with the City of Espoo. Data will be collected by means of an email survey and telephone interviews. The aim is to reach the majority of potential start-ups and growth companies. Information provided by individual undertakings will be processed confidentially and no information provided by individual respondents will be made public.
The data will be used to compile a summary report on the start-up ecosystem in the Espoo region. The results will be published by the end of 2025.
