The Builders of a Sustainable Future competition invites students in Espoo’s basic education to help create a more sustainable hometown—for the third time now. The competition kicks off in Minecraft today, August 27, 2026, in honor of Espoo Day. Participants have until October 31, 2026, to build their worlds.

The competition has three categories aimed at different grade levels: 2nd- to 3rd-graders, 4th- to 6th-graders, and 7th- to 9th-graders. Each category has been assigned age-appropriate sustainable development goals to be implemented in Minecraft. The competition is based on the curriculum objectives, and it increases pupils’ awareness of the ecological, economic, social and cultural dimensions of sustainable development. This year, the values of the new Espoo Story and the goals of its roadmap also play a significant role in the competition. Registration is open until the end of September and is done through teachers.

"It has been a pleasure to see the students' visions of the Espoo of the future. The competition has given children and young people the opportunity to bring their ideas to life on the Minecraft platform in an inspiring way," says Pedagogical ICT Expert Minna Kukkonen.

Participants do not need previous gaming experience, but the challenge will also allow them to learn about gaming and e-sports. The competition is produced under a Minecraft Education licence. All participants will receive a certificate. Winning entries will be showcased across Espoo’s various communication channels. Winners will be selected in November, and the top entries in all categories will be awarded at a festive award gala on November 25.

"The competition entries will be presented to a multidisciplinary panel, and the best ones will also be shown to the city leadership. We are building the capital for children and youth together, and the students' visions of the future are an important part of this work," emphasizes Pedagogical Expert Ilona Parviainen.

Welcome along to build a sustainable future for Espoo in Minecraft!
