In August, you can follow the culmination of the Finnish athletics season, the Finnish Athletics Championships, at Leppävaara Stadium, Espoo. During the three competition days, the national champions in athletics will be decided.

The Finnish Athletics Championships are one of the most significant national sports events of the year in Finland. Espoo will be welcoming Finland's best athletes to Leppävaara Stadium.

"We're talking about the spirit of Espoo. In the year before last, at the European Athletics U23 Championships, Leppävaara Stadium had a wonderful, supportive and happy atmosphere. I'm sure those present remember it fondly," says Harri Lammi, Secretary General of the Finnish Athletics Championships. The aim is to have a similar atmosphere at the upcoming championships, and the athletes will certainly boost the mood. The competition at Leppävaara Stadium will have a lineup of top Finnish athletes, meaning all athletes whose season will culminate in the Tokyo 25 World Championships in September, Lammi says.

The competition schedule is well-balanced. There will be interesting and high-level finals on all competition days: the final competitions for hurdles sprints and the 1500 metres run will be on Friday 1 August, while the finals for the 100 and 400 metres, 3000-metre steeplechase, and women’s pole vault will be on Saturday 2 August. Women's hammer throw, men's javelin throw and the 800 metres finals will be on Sunday 3 August.

Finnish Athletics Championships held in Espoo for the second time

The Finnish Athletics Championships were last held at Leppävaara Stadium in 2009. Now after, a 16-year break, Espoo is once again honoured to serve as a venue for the competition.

Indeed, Leppävaara Stadium is ideal for organising sports events. In summer 2023, the European Athletics U23 Championships for under 23-year-olds were also organised in Leppävaara. Later this summer, in addition to the Finnish Athletics Championships, Leppävaara will also host the Week of Finnish Championships for sports beyond athletics.

The Finnish Athletics Championships are built through close cooperation between the City of Espoo and sports clubs. The competition is hosted by Espoo-based clubs Espoon Tapiot and Esbo IF.  A group of 450 volunteers is preparing and running the event. There is still time to join if you want to work in the competition organisation!  The arrangements have been made in smooth cooperation with the City of Espoo, who is highly willing to host sports events. Two weeks after the Finnish Athletics Championships, on 14–17 August, Espoo will also host the Week of Finnish Championships where participants compete for championships in as many as 17 sports, Lammi states.
