Detached houses suitable for families will be built in Suurpelto. In addition to the more traditional terraced houses, there are plans to build townhouses in the new Nygrannas area, which are a rarer sight in the city.

The construction of Suurpelto, located near Turunväylä, Kehä II and Olari, began in January 2007. In summer 2025, the area will grow to housing 7,500 residents. Suurpelto will become a residential area of 15,000 residents by 2050.

The housing stock of Suurpelto is currently dominated by blocks of flats. In the future, there will also be more detached house construction in the area. The latest sign of this is the terraced house site started by Toivo Group Plc, which will bring 63 new family apartments to Suurpelto.

“The new residents will be able to move into their apartments in October 2026,” says Petri Vainio, Project Director of Suurpelto.

You will also see construction of detached houses east of Kehä II, as a new residential area will be built in the Nygrannas area. The plan is to make Nygrannas an area for around 1,000 residents that relies on the services of the Suurpelto centre and Mankkaa. The area’s detailed plan also leaves room for the construction of a new school and early education centre.

There are 61 townhouses located in the centre of the area. Townhouses are detached houses connected to each other and built on their own plots. The façades of townhouses with a maximum of three storeys must be built mainly from wood.

“Previously, townhouses have been built in the Säteri area in Espoo,” says Vainio.

The Nygrannas area will also have other neighbourhoods of detached houses. You can find blocks of flats mostly on the western edge of the area.

There are also other plots for detached housing in Suurpelto.

Espoo has room for new detached houses

Espoo has grown rapidly in recent years. Even though housing construction has focused on the construction of blocks of flats in recent years, detailed planning still has a lot of room for detached houses. Detached house construction will increase especially in the area covered by the master plan for the northern and central parts of Espoo.

The construction of detached houses is also reflected in the current figures of housing production. By the end of May 2025, more than one fifth of the dwellings for which construction has started this year are detached houses.
