The library classification system will be changed for fiction and films, and the call numbers will be standardized to match the non-fiction system. Other Helmet libraries will also standardize their classification system and call numbers, and this might cause delays in reservation deliveries, especially during the autumn.

Espoo City Library will change the library classification system used for fiction and films. In the future the system will match the national standard. The change will be carried out mainly during the summer of 2025 in all Espoo libraries.

During the summer the staff will replace the book labels and call numbers visible in bookshelves. The work will continue in the autumn if necessary.

Why is the change made?

Changes will be made in all Helmet libraries. In Espoo, Helsinki, Kauniainen and Vantaa changes are made so that the classification systems match each other and to improve collaboration between the cities. There are many practical benefits; for instance, new books will reach patrons quicker.

Until now Espoo City Library has used two different classification systems. For non-fiction the Finnish Public Libraries Classification System (PLC) has been used, and for fiction, the Helsinki City Library Classification System (HCLCS). Following the standardization, PLC will be used for all material.

Helsinki City Library has used its own HCLCS system for all material, but following the standardization, PLC will be used also in Helsinki.

How will the change impact patrons in Espoo City Library?

In Espoo libraries, there will be new book labels and call numbers in bookshelves. The classification system will also be different in Helmet database. During the transition there will be old and new labels and call numbers simultaneously.

Finnish, Swedish and English fiction and films will generally stay in their current shelves and locations, but there will be some changes to fiction in other languages. The library staff will gladly assist you in finding the right shelves.

The changes will cause temporary delays in reservation deliveries during the autumn. However, you can loan material and make reservations as normal during the changes.

You can familiarize yourself with the PLC classification for fiction in the Finto-service(external link, opens in a new window).
