SM-viikko will be held in Espoo again in 2026
In 2026, SM-viikko (The Week of Finnish Championships) will be held for the tenth time. The competitions will be organised in familiar competition venues, as Espoo will host SM-viikko for the first time this year. SM-viikko 2026 will run from 30 July to 2 August.
According to Martti Merra, Sports Director for the City of Espoo, SM-viikko competitions are ideal for Espoo, where people engage in sports and a wide variety of sporting events throughout the year.
“We are pleased to be hosting SM-viikko for two consecutive years. The event is a great opportunity for Espoo residents to see familiar and even unfamiliar sports right nearby without having to pay an admission fee,” says Merra.
“ Espoo has already proven to be an excellent event partner in preparing the 2025 competitions, in terms of both facilities and expertise. It is therefore a great pleasure to host SM-viikko once again in the same places with the same people. Hosting it again in the same city allows us to develop the event and come up with new ideas, because we’re already familiar with the arrangements and the competition venues have already been tested,” explains Päivi Harri, producer of SM-viikko.
This summer’s SM-viikko 2025 brings the top athletes of 24 sports to Espoo – all sports can be watched free of charge
Thousands of athletes will be gathering in Espoo for SM-viikko to compete for the Finnish championship of their respective sports. In August of this year (14–17 August), athletes from 24 different sports will be competing for Finnish Championship medals. The arrangements for the event are well underway, and the final sprint to the event begins as the spring progresses.
“When you’re organising such a large multi-sport event, careful planning plays an enormous role. SM-viikko will be put together with the participating sports, the City of Espoo and Yle. Cooperation has been absolutely seamless and we are right on schedule. So, we can rest assured as we head towards mid-August, when the entire array of SM-viikko competitions can be enjoyed at Leppävaara Sports Park, Oittaa and Vermo - and free of charge, to boot!” says Harri.
SM-viikko has been organised since 2016. Espoo is the seventh host city of the event and the third city to host the event twice. Previously, SM-viikko was held in Tampere (2016-17), Vantaa (2018-19), Joensuu (2020), Salo (2022), Lahti (2023) and Jyväskylä (2024). SM-viikko is part of the Finnish Olympic Committee’s events, and event production
consortium KOKO Tapahtuma is responsible for its operative implementation in cooperation with the involved sports governing bodies, the host city and Yle.
