Omnia’s TUVA students get to try out general upper secondary studies
In the coming academic year 2025–2026, a new cooperation model will be launched, allowing students attending Omnia’s preparatory education for programmes leading to an upper secondary qualification (TUVA) to complete study units at Espoo’s Finnish-speaking general upper secondary schools.
TUVA education is intended for young people of compulsory education age and other people without an upper secondary qualification, who need preparatory education in order to attend upper secondary education or who have not secured a study place. Through TUVA, students can explore vocational and general upper secondary education, raise their basic education grades, improve their study skills and receive career guidance. Omnia provides Finnish-language TUVA education in Espoo and Kirkkonummi, ensuring that students of compulsory education age have access to further studies.
Since autumn 2022, TUVA students interested in general upper secondary education have been able to choose the ‘General upper secondary path’ (Korotus- ja lukiopolku), which has been organised in cooperation with Espoo’s general upper secondary school for adults. As of autumn 2025, TUVA students will also be able to complete study units in a Finnish-speaking general upper secondary school. At the same time, they will see what studying in general upper secondary school among their peers is like. This new path has been developed in close cooperation between the City of Espoo and Omnia.
The goal is to give young people a clear understanding of general upper secondary education and the skills it requires. Alongside general upper secondary studies, students will have the opportunity to improve their basic education grades. General upper secondary study units completed during TUVA education count towards the general upper secondary education syllabus. However, completing study units alone will not guarantee admission to a general upper secondary school. TUVA students can apply to general upper secondary school if places become available and the student meets the school’s admission criteria. The main application route for general upper secondary education is the joint application process in the spring.
To attend classes at a general upper secondary school, a student must have a minimum grade point average of 7.00 in theoretical subjects on their school-leaving certificate and sufficient proficiency in the language of instruction. The student attends the school for at least one period, which is approximately 7 weeks. Depending on the student’s goals and completed studies, they may also attend the school for several periods. All TUVA students receive a personalised competence development plan. Based on this plan, the first students on the General upper secondary path can begin their studies in general upper secondary school once the autumn term starts.
