SM-viikko (the Week of Finnish Championships) is the celebration of diversity in Finnish sports, held on 14–18 August 2025. All events during SM-viikko are free of charge. You can also try out some spots yourself.

The disciplines included in SM-viikko include open water swimming, beach taekwondo, cheerleading, coastal rowing, cornhole, judo, cricket, flag football, goalball, canoe marathon, mounted trot, Olympic rowing, pétanque, table tennis, tractor pulling, 3v3 floorball, adventure race, standup paddleboarding, taido, triathlon, ultimate frisbee, x-trial and 3D archery.

The events of SM-viikko will be mostly held at the Leppävaara Sports Park, which hosts 17 of the different Finnish championships. Oittaa will host the rowing and canoe championships and the Vermo Race Track will host the mounted trot championships for the very first time.

Event includes both traditional and first-time disciplines

The event that is hosted in Espoo is the ninth SM-viikko. Counting the disciplines in the coming August, the participating sports federations have presented up to 95 different disciplines of sport to Finns over the years. One of the standard participants in the event is the Finnish Motorcyclist Association.

“It is fantastic that the Motorcyclist Association has been invited to participate in SM-viikko almost every year. As an event, SM-viikko is an excellent combination of different sports and disciplines and is a great way to introduce them to the public. It provides a great deal of national visibility for motorsports, both at the event grounds and on public television,” says Ville Salonen, secretary general of the Finnish Motorcyclist Association.

The Finnish Motorcyclist Association has participated with more than one style of motorsport. Impressive X-trials have been a part of the event almost every year, and so it is in Espoo as well.

“X-trial is well suited for Sm-viikko whether it is summer or winter. Many sports at the same venue create a comfortable atmosphere for both the competitors and the audience. Organising competitions brings many active club members together to achieve the best and most impressive competition,” says Jörgen Nylund, Chair of the Finnish Motorcyclist Association’s Trial group.

One of the new features of the coming SM-viikko event is cheerleading. Finland is one of the world’s leading countries in cheerleading, so the audiences of SM-viikko can expect jaw-dropping sporting performances.

“We are going to trial a new scoring system in the competition, which makes it possible to show the jury score immediately after a bout. This will make cheerleading more accessible to spectators. One-minute bouts and the energetic and surprising nature of the sport are incredibly well suited to the concept of the SM-week,” says Wilma Sirkka, Communications and Marketing Specialist at the Finnish Cheerleading Association.

Espoo is the seventh host city of the SM-viikko

Espoo is organising the SM-viikko for the first time. Previously, the event was held in Jyväskylä (2024), Lahti (2023), Salo (2022), Joensuu (2020), Vantaa (2018-2019) and Tampere (2016-2017).

Espoo is delighted to host the event and its diverse range of disciplines.

“A magnificent, versatile spread of sports that suit Espoo, which we can take as a wealth in the offering of an attractive sports city. We want to present a broad range of sports to residents, visitors and athletes. For that, SM-week is a fantastic concept and opportunity. I welcome everyone to the capital of nature activities in Espoo to play, spectate and experience,” says Sports Director Martti Merra.
