Espoo and partners cooperate to solve climate challenges
Espoo is involving the entire Espoo community in its efforts to achieve carbon neutrality. The city and its partners are exploring new ways to achieve the carbon neutrality goal in the energy, construction and transport sectors.
Focus on climate efforts in energy, transport and construction
Espoo’s 25 climate partners are committed to taking measures that support the city’s carbon neutrality goal. The cooperation between the city and its climate partners is based on the shared desire to reduce emissions both within and beyond Espoo’s borders. Achieving these goals also requires new competence, skills, perspectives and operating models.
To support climate efforts, Espoo, its climate partners, and the Climate Leadership Coalition (CLC) business network will refine the details of the Carbon-neutral Espoo 2030 roadmap during 2025. Focus areas include the electrification of the energy system, reducing emissions from van and lorry traffic, and the use of low-carbon steel and concrete in construction. These refinements will provide a deeper insight into the required measures, their timing, relevant networks and the roles of different stakeholders. In addition, the partners will develop an investment framework to promote green investments in Espoo and other European cities. The details will be refined through workshops. The first workshop will be held in December, followed by workshops in February and April. New participants are welcome to join. For more information, contact the project managers listed at the bottom of the page.
Espoo also invites organisations and residents to join climate efforts
Achieving the climate goal requires the commitment of the entire community. Espoo is strengthening its cooperation with local organisations to promote resident participation and to develop fair and effective climate actions. The aim is to ensure that residents see climate efforts as meaningful and fair and that they have opportunities to make sustainable choices in their daily lives. This work began at meetings with organisations and sports clubs in November and continues in January with a workshop for organisations and further cooperation with sports clubs.
Throughout 2025, the city and organisations will experiment with and develop initiatives that raise awareness about mitigating climate change and inspire residents to make climate-friendly choices. Initiatives will be planned and implemented in cooperation with organisations, networks, civil society actors, businesses and other climate partners.
The work is based on the Espoo Climate Community (COMET) project, which involves the entire Espoo community in climate efforts to achieve the city’s carbon neutrality goal. The project focuses on the three sectors that produce the most greenhouse gas emissions: energy, transport and construction.
The project is funded by the EU’s Pilot Cities Programme, which is part of the EU’s climate mission. Pilot Cities is a learning and piloting programme targeted at cities selected for the EU’s climate mission, where cities and their partners seek systemic solutions to climate challenges.
