Sports and Exercise Committee’s decisions 26/9/2024

At its meeting, the Espoo Sports and Exercise Committee approved the interim report as well as the 2026–2027 financial plan and the 2025 budget proposal of the Sports and Exercise Unit.
According to the 2025 budget proposal, sports facilities in sports parks open to all municipal residents without a reservation will be developed further. During 2024, the Sports and Exercise Unit will build outdoor gyms next to the Juvanpuisto and Latokaski playing fields and fitness stairs in Laaksolahti and Kalajärvi. A local exercise area has been completed in the Matinkylä Sports Park.
The artificial turf in Laajalahti has been installed in cooperation with local actors. The city paid half of the costs, while the Laajalahtiseura association raised the rest of the funds needed. This model has proved to be highly functional.
In the Leppävaara Sports Park, the construction of artificial ice and turf, tennis courts, a beach volleyball court and a local exercise area has begun. The projects will be completed in summer 2025.
The timetable for the new construction of the Espoonlahti Swimming Hall is not clear. The maintenance work required by the hall is increasing and there are new problems arising, which causes long maintenance breaks.
The street and park planning of the Tapiola Sports Park will continue and the construction of new fields and courts will begin in 2025. The timetable for the construction of the stadium is not yet clear. The renovation of the Tapiola Swimming Hall is expected to begin in late 2024 and is expected to be completed in 2027.
Scheduled traffic in the archipelago will be developed further. The aim is to find new island destinations and improve municipal residents’ opportunities to visit the archipelago, in addition to which the camping and barbecue sites in the archipelago will be developed.
The aim is to increase the number of exercise groups aimed specifically at people aged over 75. The number of Töpinät activities for families as well as low-threshold hobby groups for children and young people will be increased according to regional needs. Sports groups are organised in close cooperation with clubs and other partners.
Espoo has received positive recognition as a venue for major sports events. The sports events to be held in Espoo in 2025 include the Finnish Athletics Championships (Kalevan kisat), Week of Finnish Championships and Goalball Club World Championships.
