Sello Shopping Centre has been chosen as the Action for Accessibility 2024. An honourable mention was granted to the accessible art work Espoon Nelli. The award and honourable mention were handed out by Espoo Disability Council and its Rakennetaan kaikille (Let’s Build for Everyone) working group.

The justifications noted that that Sello works in cooperation with and has done well in considering the development suggestions highlighted by the Espoo Disability Council in planning shopping centre renovations, for example. Sello has also improved audio guidance for the visually impaired based on feedback.

In addition to this, the justifications state that the shopping centre is easy to navigate. The signposts, which were updated this year, make mobility and navigation easier for all customers.

“We want to emphasise the significance of cooperation in promoting accessibility. Through its activities, Sello Shopping Centre has demonstrated the benefit of cooperation to all of us,” says Pirkko Kuusela, Chair of Espoo Disability Council.

The Action for Accessibility award can be granted to an Espoo-based service, company, community, actualised idea or other activity that makes services available to everyone and facilitates mobility. This was the tenth time of selecting an Action for Accessibility.

The Disability Council granted an honourable mention to the accessible art work Espoon Nelli. The piece is a sculpture that you can touch and sit beside.

The work is relocated regularly. This summer, the location was Viaporintori Square in Leppävaara. The place was selected by Espoo Disability Council. The choice of location was impacted by accessibility and many nearby services.

“You can stop by to say hello to Nelli and handle other errands in the same go, which saves on transport service trips. The audio beacon also helps visually impaired people find Nelli,” Kuusela says.

Sello Shopping Centre and Espoon Nelli received their accolades in the accessibility seminar held by Espoo Disability Council on Tuesday 29 October 2024.
