Pilot experiment limits parking in Espoo during winter and spring

25.10.2024 10.09

Espoo will limit on-street parking from 1 November 2024 to 31 May 2025 due to street maintenance. The aim of this pilot experiment is to make snow removal and spring cleaning easier.

Vehicles parked along the streets hinder street maintenance, particularly when it snows and during grit removal in the spring. It is difficult to clear the snow and clean the streets when there are vehicles parked along them. It benefits everyone if street maintenance runs smoothly and vehicles do not need to be towed unnecessarily.

During the winter and spring, Espoo will limit parking on streets that are narrow and difficult to maintain. There are several pilot areas in different parts of Espoo. The parking restrictions and changes will take effect at the beginning of November, and new traffic signs have already been placed in the pilot areas in October.

Main changes:

  • The hours of parking will be reduced in some of the 24-hour parking spaces.
  • In some areas, parking will be prohibited on certain days throughout the winter and spring.
  • In some areas, the obligation to use a parking disc will be extended.
  • Parking will be moved to the side of the street that does not have a pavement.
  • Traffic signs will be checked and replaced with new combinations if necessary.

The aim of these changes is to increase vehicle turnover in the parking spaces and free up space for maintenance purposes.

The experiment will run from the beginning of November until the end of May 2025. Espoo will collect feedback on the experiment through an online survey and the city feedback service. Based on the experiences gained and the feedback received, the city will assess the impacts of the experiment and make the necessary changes to the measures before extending them to other districts.

Traffic signs indicate various parking restrictions

New traffic sign combinations will be brought to the pilot areas to indicate the parking restrictions.

The pilot areas will have new traffic sign combinations that inform drivers of the parking restrictions during the pilot experiment from 1 November 2024 to 31 May 2025. There are no-parking sign combinations for five different situations:

1) Parking is prohibited once a week in an area where parking is otherwise not limited. Parking will be prohibited once a week on Iirismäki, Iirislahdentie and Iirislahdenranta.

2) Parking is entirely prohibited during the winter and spring season. This solution is possible in areas where other parking spaces are available nearby. A total parking prohibition will be tested on Pikkulinnuntie.

3) Parking is prohibited in the no-parking zone on weekdays from 8:00 to 12:00. This kind of prohibition will be tested on Kulovalkeantie, Ullantorpantie, Trillakatu, Kappalaisentie and Etuniemenniitty.

4) The request to remove vehicles prohibits parking during the winter and spring season. This solution can be used in areas where other parking spaces are available nearby. The city will test this prohibition on Alakartanonkuja, Soukanahde, Juvanniitty, Virkatilantie and Isonkorventie.

5) The other sign requesting to remove vehicles prohibits parking once a week. This kind of parking prohibition will be tested on Kirstinmäki, Kirstinsyrjä, Itäinen rantatie, Liinasaarenkuja and in Laurinlahti.

The map below shows the streets affected by the changes.

This map shows the streets and districts that are primarily covered by the experiment.

On some other streets, 24-hour parking will also be reduced, for example to four hours, along with a requirement to use a parking disc.
