Espoo as a partner for the esteemed Millennium Technology Prize

The City of Espoo and Technology Academy Finland have agreed on cooperation regarding the Millennium Technology Prize. The prize will be handed out at Dipoli on 30 October 2024.

The partnership with Technology Academy Finland is an example of the seamless dialogue between the public and private sector, which is a key element of the Finnish innovation system. The collaboration provides the City of Espoo with the opportunity to present the solutions to promote a sustainable future that are created through the Espoo innovation partnership.

Aalto University and VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland form the core that gathers all operators – start-ups, students, top companies, researchers and residents – to create innovations for a better life,” says Mayor of Espoo Jukka Mäkelä

This year, the Millennium Technology Prize was granted to Professor Bantval Jayant Baliga for his innovative IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor). The prize-winning innovation makes the electrification of societies and the transition to renewable energy efficient and profitable. The IGBT technology is used in wind and solar power plants, hospitals, vehicles, lifts, and kitchen and ventilation equipment. The prize will be handed out to Professor Baliga on 30 October 2024. 

The City of Espoo and Technology Academy Finland have agreed upon cooperation regarding the 2024 Millennium Technology Prize event. The event will be held on 30 October 2024 at the Dipoli building in Otaniemi, and it will reach the scientific community on a global and cross-disciplinary scale. President of the Republic of Finland Alexander Stubb serves as the patron of the Millennium Technology Prize. The other partners include Aalto University, Neste, Kone and Nokia.

The City of Espoo and VTT will have a booth at the event to present concrete innovations and inventions. At the booth, people can learn about the following companies originated by VTT: VTT LaunchPad, Steady Energy, Flow Computing, The Warming Surfaces Company, SemiQon, Cooliblade and Happy Plant Protein.
