Changes in teaching arrangements at Mankkaan koulu from January 7 to March 31, 2025

In the meeting of the Growth and Learning Committee on October 30, 2024, a proposal will be discussed regarding the teaching arrangements at Mankkaan koulu from January 7 to March 31, 2025. In addition to Mankkaan koulu, classes will also be held in temporary facilities at Kutojantie and Nihtisillankuja during the time when the C-wing of Mankkaan koulu is undergoing sealing repairs from January 2 to March 28, 2025, for arts and skills and other subjects.

Background

In 2021, Sweco conducted an indoor climate and moisture condition survey at Mankkaan koulu. Based on this survey, plans for sealing repairs have been developed, which include sealing repairs for structural joints and windows.

During the spring semester of 2024, an inspection of the ventilation system was conducted to assess its condition, functionality, and cleanliness, primarily through sensory observation. In the summer of 2024, sealing repairs and kitchen and dining area renovations were made in the B-wing of Mankkaan koulu.

Starting January 2, 2025, sealing repairs will be conducted in the classroom areas of the C-wing. This necessitates the relocation of classes in the C-wing for three months, from January 7 to March 31, 2025.

The C-wing of Mankkaan koulu contains six general education classrooms and five classrooms for skills and arts subjects. The facilities in the C-wing will not be available during the sealing repairs, so education must be organised in temporary, suitable facilities.

An assessment of suitable temporary facilities has been conducted in collaboration with the school principals and the Finnish Basic Education Unit. The assessment specifically considered the teaching arrangements for Kilonpuiston koulu in the Kutojantie and Nihtisillankuja facilities.

Processing the Matter

The principals of Mankkaan koulu and Kilonpuiston koulu have collaboratively developed a plan for teaching arrangements at Kutojantie and Nihtisillankuja facilities during the period of January 7 to March 31, 2025. Skills and arts education, as well as partially in other subjects, will be organised in these facilities. The schedules for Mankkaan koulu have been finalised, with classes arranged in the temporary facilities considering the available capacity.

The use of the temporary facilities at Kutojantie and Nihtisillankuja is deemed safe for Mankkaan koulu students and will not significantly extend travel times. Transfers during the school day will be minimised.

Travel to the full-day or part-time temporary facilities will occur independently or via public transport using the HSL card. Students whose travel distance to the Kutojantie or Nihtisillankuja facilities exceeds 3 kilometers will receive the HSL card. Students may also receive school transportation (taxi) upon a separate application from their guardians, provided the conditions for granting travel benefits are met for that student.

The distance from Mankkaan koulu to the Kutojantie and Nihtisillankuja facilities using public transport (bus number 114) is 2.6 km, with a travel time of approximately 10 minutes. The route between Nihtisillankuja and Kutojantie is safe, utilising pedestrian crossings and traffic lights.

Supervision during class breaks will be carried out by both schools to ensure student identification and safety.

The cafeteria in the Kutojantie facilities has sufficient capacity for simultaneous dining of students from both schools. To ensure smooth dining, Mankkaan koulu students will eat in the temporary facilities staggered with Kilonpuisto students.

Classes and breaks for Mankkaan koulu will be organised next spring, considering the teaching schedules of Kilonpuiston koulu.
