Kvanttinova is an industry-driven piloting and development facility for microelectronics and quantum technology in Espoo, Finland. It is a joint initiative by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, the City of Espoo, Aalto University and the industry members of the semiconductor industry group of Technology Industries of Finland.

Kvanttinova contains shared use piloting facilities, company-specific labs, cleanrooms, and office areas. The unique piloting environment focuses on pre-commercial development and at its core offers pilot lines for R&D for scaling-up.

Kvanttinova has its own significant role to play in easing Europe’s chip shortage and boosting Europe’s strategic competitiveness in semiconductors. In Finland, there is special expertise in “More-than-Moore" semiconductor technology. This technology refers to integrated photonics, MEMS sensors, radio frequency communication, silicon detectors and quantum technology. As part of Kvanttinova, VTT and its European partners, are pursuing to build a superconducting quantum pilot line contributing to the European Chips Act. Finland has committed 79 M€ national funding for pilot lines in Kvanttinova semiconductor hub, including the superconducting pilot line, to match the EU contribution from the Chips Act.

Kvanttinova will be built in the immediate proximity to Micronova, located in Espoo, the largest research cleanroom in the Nordics. The cleanroom will be connected to enable flexible use of both facilities together. Finnish quantum computers are also located in Micronova. This creates a combination of the cleanroom for early-stage research and the pilot line enabling scale-up of processes and products. There are almost 20 companies from SMEs to large enterprises involved in the planning of Kvanttinova. Kvanttinova’s vision is to be one of Europe’s major semiconductor hubs in the future.
