Celebrate Women’s Day at Espoo’s cultural venues
Events will be held on and around International Women’s Day. The programme includes an Open Mic night by the rap duo Matriarkaatti, Anneli Saaristo’s concert ‘La Dolce Diva’, the ‘Tyttösankarit’ concert by Mimmit, and a Women’s Day art workshop for adults.
Rap duo Matriarkaatti’s Open Mic night at Kannusali
The spotlight will be on new talents at the Matriarkaatti x Kannusali Open Mic night held at Kannusali’s Café Bar Luola on Thursday 7 March.
The event is hosted by the rap duo Matriarkaatti, i.e. Mon-Sala and Adikia (aka dj paha.narttu). The anti-racist and feminist Matriarkaatti wants to promote diversity in the rap community. Rap artists Kakku and Valma will close the evening.
“The Open Mic stage welcomes female, non-binary and transmasculine rap performers. You can be a newcomer or a more seasoned rap artist. Complete equality is still a faraway goal, so in honour of Women’s Day, we want to offer a platform for new talents and voices of the future,” says Kannusali’s Production Manager Lani Nordlund.
Open Mic nights have previously been organised successfully in Helsinki, for example at Bar Siltanen and Tiivistämö. The event is free of charge, accessible and diverse. All those interested in the latest trends in rap music are welcome to attend.

Female energy fills up the room at Sello Hall
Sello Hall, located in Leppävaara, will celebrate International Women’s Day for an entire week. There will be performers of all ages, and the events are intended for everyone interested in high-quality music and culture.
First to take the stage is Anneli Saaristo, who has performed for 55 years, with her concert ‘La Dolce Diva’ on Wednesday 6 March. Saaristo has many reasons to celebrate. This year marks the 35th anniversary of the Eurovision Song Contest where the singer performed her iconic hit ‘La Dolce Vita’. Saaristo also celebrates her 75th birthday this year. The next day, Thursday 7 March, Sello Hall welcomes the up-and-coming pop singer-songwriter Aliisa Syrjä. Her gold-streaming debut album ’Höyheniä ja saaria’ was released in October 2023.
On International Women’s Day, Friday 8 March, Kannusali presents Katri Ylander, who performs her new songs and old hits together with her band. Saturday 9 March features the band Mimmit with their concert ‘Tyttösankarit’ (girl heroes). The audience gets to hear fascinating musical stories about girls and women who have changed the world through their actions.

Art workshop on International Women’s Day at Aurora
The Children’s Cultural Centre Aurora in Järvenperä will organise a cardboard printmaking workshop for adults on Friday 8 March. Participants will use juice and milk cartons as plate materials and make the prints with the help of a printing press. The workshop instructor is printmaker and visual artist Anna-Maija Mattila-Selin. To celebrate Women’s Day, you can also visit the exhibition ‘The Glow of Hope’ by Ukrainian artist Kateryna Harahulia at Aurora until 9 March.
In honour of Women’s Day, Aurora also wants to remind visitors of its glorious past. Aurora Karamzin – an influential social figure and philanthropist – created the yard of Children’s Cultural Centre Aurora as early as the 19th century.
