Public art is being planned for Kera
Kera is developing from a former industrial area into an urban district with housing, services and workplaces. An art programme was prepared for the area in 2019, based on which the area’s art has now been planned in more detail.
Due to the history of the area, ceramics is the starting point for Kera’s art and it is present in all the proposed works. A ceramic factory operated in Kera until 1958, and clay was available on site.
The construction of the Kera area is a long process, so it will take years until artworks can be admired in the area. However, five proposals have now been completed and they offer us a glimpse of what Kera and its art will look like.
Ceramic artist Heini Riitahuhta, visual artists Inka Bell, Tiia Matikainen and Ville Heimala, and ceramic artist and sculptor Irene Nordli (Norway) have all created proposals for the southern parts of Kera. Works are being planned for underpasses as well as street and park areas.
The proposals have been created in connection with street and park planning and in cooperation between the artists, EMMA Espoo Museum of Modern Art, the planners of the area, Public Art Agency Finland that has served as an art consultancy, and Espoo’s City Planning Department.
