This autumn, researchers at the University of Turku are collecting information from residents of Espoo, Lahti, and Oulu regarding their mobility habits. The research is part of the Transformative Cities project funded by the Academy of Finland.

The researchers hope to receive responses from residents aged 15 and over living in the cities surveyed.

“The respondents are asked to place important everyday locations on a map and to indicate the modes of transport they use to travel. In addition, the respondents are asked to rate statements related to their mobility preferences and choice of residence,” says Felix Hallikainen, doctoral researcher at the Department of Geography and Geology at the University of Turku.

The researchers are interested in finding out what kind of mobility-related lifestyles urban residents prefer. The aim of the study is to improve the conditions for smooth mobility for urban residents, and in particular to increase the amount of active mobility.

"The data collected in this survey on the lifestyles related to mobility is unique. It can be used to identify different needs and wishes related to mobility, on the basis of which the residents’ quality of life can be improved by developing a sustainable urban environment for the future,” says Hallikainen.

The study is part of the multidisciplinary Transformative Cities project, which uses new methods to work faster towards carbon neutrality goals, biodiversity conservation and an increased adoption of sustainable ways of life.

All responses will be valuable for the study. The survey will be open until 31 October and can be completed on a mobile phone, tablet or computer. The survey will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. The survey is available in Finnish, Swedish and English.
