Espoo’s third Children’s Weekend is almost here
The weekend is once again jam-packed with family-friendly entertainment and activities as we celebrate children’s culture around Espoo from 29 September to 1 October 2023.
Children’s Weekend event organisers include the Espoo Cultural Centre, Sello Hall, Exhibition Centre WeeGee, Kannusali, Children’s Cultural Centre Aurora, Vindängensalen, Lippulaiva and Iso Omena libraries, and the Espoonlahti cultural project.
According to Children’s Culture Coordinator Johanna Kallioaho, Children’s Weekend was established because Espoo’s cultural venues wanted to organise something special for this important target group.
“Children’s Weekend is now held for the third time. The celebration starts on 29 September, which is also Baby’s Day. We are so happy to have Vindängensalen in Tapiola and the Lippulaiva and Iso Omena libraries join our list of event organisers. The wide array of high-quality children’s events include options that are free of charge,” Kallioaho says.
Mexican children’s theatre at Aurora and free exhibition at WeeGee
Our international guest is the Mexican Compañía Teatro al Vacío with their performance Pulsar/Pulse at the Children’s Cultural Centre Aurora in Järvenperä on Friday 29 September. Teatro al Vacío is one of the reformers of children’s theatre in Latin America and specialises in creating performances about important things in life for young children.
On the same day, the whole family can take a guided tour of the Mauri Kunnas exhibition at the Exhibition Centre WeeGee in Tapiola.
Music to suit all tastes
On Friday 29 September, Kannusali in Espoon keskus will be rocking to the tunes of children’s heavy metal band Moottörin Jyrinä.
On Saturday 30 September, the Espoo Cultural Centre offers jazz concerts for the whole family. On the same day, Sello Hall celebrates its 20th anniversary with a children’s concert featuring Tuomo Rannankari ja Hiekkakakkuorkesteri. On Sunday 1 October, the Espoo Cultural Centre features ‘Avain hukassa’ – a performance combining music and contemporary circus.
Mimi and Kuku perform at Iso Omena and Lippulaiva libraries on Saturday 30 September.
Workshops around Espoo
Children’s Weekend also includes workshops. At the ‘Step into the picture’ workshop organised by the Exhibition Centre WeeGee, participants will draw inspiration from the works of Mauri Kunnas. After Children’s Weekend, the workshop will tour Espoo until the end of November. Finland’s pompom queen Rakkaudella MARRE and her mascot Matti will host a pompom workshop at the Children’s Cultural Centre Aurora on Sunday 1 October.
