Hundreds of children and young people get to start their school year in brand-new school or day care facilities.

The new primary school in Kuitinmäki opens its doors in August. The new building replaces the former Tähtiniityn koulu school building in Olari. Nearly 370 primary school pupils embark on their school journey in the new facilities in Kuitinmäki.

Pupils of Laajalahden koulu will also be able to start their school year in new and improved facilities after the school’s renovation and extension project is completed in August. The pupils have attended school at temporary premises in Otaniemi during the renovation project.

Furthermore, many children will start their early childhood education in new facilities in Espoo as the extension and renovation of Mankkaan päiväkoti day care centre is completed. Niittykumpu’s new day care centre, Niittykummun päiväkoti, will be welcoming local children after its completion in September. In total, the new day care centres offer places for nearly 200 children.

Facility projects aim at carbon neutrality

The City of Espoo’s school and day care centre projects focus on the functionality, health and safety of facilities as well as sustainable energy solutions based on renewable energy sources. New school buildings in Espoo are mainly geothermally heated, and in most cases, solar panels are installed on the roof. In some projects, geothermal cooling has been used. In this method, the heat energy is transferred back to the ground to extend the life cycle of energy wells.

“By choosing sustainable energy solutions for our new facility projects, we support the city’s ambitious carbon neutrality goals. We keep these goals in mind as we plan our facilities and energy solutions,” says Maija Lehtinen, Managing Director of the Premises Department.

The City of Espoo aims to reach carbon neutrality by 2030.
