Aava audio play takes you for a walk through Espoo’s Waterfront Walkway and delves deep into the theme of sufficiency

Experience Espoo’s Waterfront Walkway while listening to an audio play. The location-dependent audio play Aava takes you for a stroll from Matinkylä beach all the way to the cliffs in front of Villa Kolikari.

The author of the audio play, Paula Kovanen, wanted it to deal with the themes of efficiency and sufficiency.

“The audio play is about striving to be enough and avoiding feelings of inadequacy, having control of your own life but also whether you should always have control over everything,” Kovanen describes.

Kovanen wrote the audio play with the setting in mind. Although Kovanen has grown up in Espoo, she was not familiar with the shores of Matinkylä.

“The presence of the sea makes me think of the birth of life, the cradle of life so to speak. Finding out that I am expecting my first child during the early stages of the writing process made me want to reflect on becoming a parent through inspiring themes,” Kovanen says.

Writing the audio play gave the artist an opportunity to familiarise herself with Espoo’s Waterfront Walkway and the history of the nearby area. The artist found out that a villa designed by Wivi Lönn is located in the area. Lönn was a pioneering woman of her time but her story also touches on the themes of burnout and exhaustion. Lönn’s story is also connected to that of the main character in the audio play.

Kovanen points out that the audio play may hold a personal meaning for some. For others, it may simply be a moment to appreciate the art of audio plays in nature.

You can listen to the audio play for free via the internet anytime you wish. The audio play is in Finnish. Instructions on listening can be found on the website.

The audio play has been commissioned by Partnerships and Promoting culture.
