Local school decisions for new 7th-graders have been made
On 5 April 2023, the City of Espoo assigned local schools to 2,049 pupils who will start the 7th grade in the autumn.
Local schools were assigned within the pupil catchment areas and within the school-specific maximum numbers of pupils determined by the Growth and Learning Committee. The pupils’ A languages, i.e. foreign languages started in grades 1–6, were also taken into account in these decisions.
Local schools were first assigned to pupils whose medical condition or other relevant situation needed to be taken into consideration. Then local schools were assigned to pupils who have siblings in a specific school. Other pupils’ local schools were assigned based on the distance to school, taking account of all new 7th-graders living in each pupil catchment area. Pupils’ wishes concerning local schools were taken into consideration where possible.
Local schools were not assigned to pupils who are attending mainstream education in a joint comprehensive school and will attend the 7th grade in the same school based on a previous decision.
Decisions for pupils needing special support are made for each pupil catchment area based on uniform criteria. Special needs education is provided in local and city-level groups.
Local schools were assigned in the above-mentioned manner to those pupils for whom special support is provided in a group within mainstream education or in a school-specific special needs education group or as a flexible combination of these two methods.

Decisions are sent through Wilma or by post
Decisions are only sent electronically through Wilma or by post, depending on which option was selected on the application form. All special support decisions are sent by post. You can find your electronic decision through the browser version of Wilma under ‘Applications and decisions’. Decisions cannot be viewed through the Wilma mobile application. Paper decisions are delivered during week 15. We do not provide information on decisions by phone.
You do not need to accept a place in the local school. The local school decision will remain in force while the pupil is attending the grades available at the school.
You can contact the principal who made the decision if you wish to further discuss the criteria used for your child’s local school decision. If you are not satisfied with the local school decision, you can submit an appeal against the decision to the Regional State Administrative Agency for Southern Finland within 14 days of receiving the decision. Appeal instructions are sent together with the decision.
Pupils may be admitted to a secondary school (i.e. a school that is not the local school assigned by the municipality) based on a guardian’s application if there are places left. You can find the application instructions, schedule and admission criteria on this page.
