World Water Day has been celebrated on 22 March since 1993 . Its aim is to raise awareness of the impact of water resources on economic productivity and social wellbeing. Each year, World Water Day has a specific theme, and this year’s theme is accelerating change to solve the global water and sanitation crisis. There are many ways in which you can promote sustainable water use in your daily life. Here are some of them:

  • Take shorter showers. Do not leave the water running while soaping yourself and washing your hair. Showering consumes the most water at home.
  • Fix leaky taps and other plumbing fixtures. They may end up costing you a lot of money.
  • Monitor your water consumption. Significant increases in consumption may be a sign of leakage.

You can find more tips for water use on the website of Helsinki Region Environmental Services (HSY)(external link, opens in a new window).

Remember that you should not flush or pour just anything down the drain – only toilet paper, pee, poop and flushing water, water used for washing dishes and laundry, and water used for washing and cleaning. Food scraps, chemicals and rubbish, among other things, should never go down the drain. Read more about drain etiquette on the HSY website(external link, opens in a new window).
