Espoo school and holiday times for school year 2023-2024 are decided

Autumn term begins on 10 August 2023 and ends on 22 December 2023. 

• Autumn holiday: 16 October 2023 – 20 October 2023 
• Christmas holiday: 23 December 2023 – 7 January 2024

Spring term begins on 9th of January 2024 and ends on Saturday 3rd of June 2024. 

• Winter holiday: 19 February 2024 – 24 February 2024 

In pre-primary education provided by the Early Childhood Education Unit the last day of spring term is 31 May 2024. The final-year students in upper secondary school have their last school day on 8 February 2024. 

The number of school days and the last day of the school year will be the same throughout Finland. Schools can change maximum one school-day into a holiday by running school on one Saturday.

In 2019 and 2020, pupils, their parents and students and school boards were asked for their opinion on the timing of school days and holidays. In the surveys, a clear majority hoped for a week-long autumn holiday.

The Growth and Learning Committee Finnish Education decided on the school days and holidays at their meeting on 2 November 2022. The Swedish Education and Cultural Committee will decide on the school days and holidays at their meeting on 24 November 2022.

The City of Espoo offers many activities to school children and families during the holidays, for example, exhibitions, sports, movies, events, various workshops and versatile outdoor activities. Most of these activities are free of charge.
