Espoo has a unique growth story
“Espoo’s 50th anniversary as a city is a milestone in our growth story”, says Mayor of Espoo Jukka Mäkelä.
The city has grown into a large metropolis, but thanks to its network structure, residents can still live close to nature and services in a safe city. Espoo residents appreciate their local nature, safety, knowledge, and wellbeing services, which is reflected in the city’s strategy, the Espoo Story, and its values.
“Our story is quite unique. A few years ago, Espoo was awarded the title of Europe’s most sustainable city, and we will continue to build a sustainable Espoo so that all our residents can grow up and live in a safe and prosperous world. Success has required – and will require – innovation. Ready-made solutions or models rarely exist, which means that we have had to develop them together with our residents, businesses, educational institutions and universities,” Mäkelä says and continues: “Building the sustainable Espoo of the future is also a joint effort.”
