25.3.2022 13.34
The sports facilities to be completed this year in Espoo include two new outdoor gyms, at least one new set of workout stairs, an extended roller ski track, a new winter swimming area, two new artificial ice rinks, a renewed gymnastics foam pit and a new archipelago route for cyclists. In addition to these, we will celebrate the opening of a new swimming pool!
There are hundreds of sports facilities in Espoo that are regularly maintained and, if necessary, renovated. Each year, we also build new facilities. Check out our plans for 2022 and beyond.
Swimming pools
- The new Matinkylä swimming pool opens at the beginning of April 2022.
- The planning of the renovation and extension of the Espoonlahti swimming pool continues. The aim is to have the new swimming pool up and running in early 2025.
- Renovation planning for the Tapiola swimming pool continues. Completion is scheduled for early 2025.
Sports parks
- The construction of the Kameleonten sports hall has begun at the Leppävaara sports park. Due to construction work, the artificial turf, the neighbourhood sports area and the ball sports field are out of service. The hall will be completed in the spring of 2023. The throwing area of the sports park will be renovated, and the sports park will also be developed as part of a wider park plan.
- The artificial turf at the Laaksolahti sports park will be replaced. The old turf will be installed in the smaller fields in Jupperi and Otsolahti as sand-infilled artificial turf. The turf in Laaksolahti will be heated in the winter by district heating.
- The surface of the tennis courts at the Otaniemi sports park will be replaced with sand-infilled artificial turf. In the winter, the courts will be covered with artificial ice. Boards will be installed for ice hockey players.
- The construction of the baseball field and the maintenance building of the artificial ice at the Espoonlahti sports park has been delayed. The contract has been put out to tender at the beginning of the year, with the aim of starting construction at the end of the year.
Other outdoor sports facilities
- A ball sports field and a maintenance building will be built in Perkkaa in connection with the new school and youth centre. The field will be fitted with artificial turf that will be covered with artificial ice in the winter. Boards will be installed for ice hockey players. An outdoor gym will also be built in connection with the field.
- An outdoor gym will be built at the beach in Matinkylä.
- A new winter swimming area will be opened at the Laurinlahti beach.
- Workout stairs will be built at Vahvialankallio in Laajalahti.
- Workout stairs have been planned for Kabiksenkallio near Olarin koulu.
- A new outdoor recreation route at Kuurinmäenpolku will be completed.
- The Oittaa roller ski track will be extended.
Other plans include replacing fences and gates at ball sports fields and renovating other sports and exercise facilities.
Archipelago and boating
- A new recreational route will be opened that combines cycling and a boat trip around Suvisaaristo. The boat stops at Kivenlahti, Nokkala and Otaniemi, and you can take your bicycle with you and continue your journey by cycling on Espoo’s Waterfront Walkway, even all the way back to your point of departure.
- The services in Espoo’s outer archipelago will be developed. For example, a new barbecue shelter will be built on Iso Vasikkasaari.
- This year, two large piers will be rebuilt: pier D at the Suomenoja marina and pier A at the Haukilahti marina.
