Nature datasets in Espoo
The Environmental Protection’s services of the City of Espoo maintain a number of spatial data sets on nature and environment topics.
Nature datasets in Espoo
The City of Espoo's WMS and WFS interface offers a number of different datasets that are updated by the Environmental Protection’s services. Some of the material is openly available and the use of some requires credentials.
The datasets requiring credentials are intended for limited and appropriate use only. To get the credentials required to view them, please contact the Environmental Protection’s services. Send an email to ymparisto (at) espoo.fi under the heading “REQUEST FOR MATERIALS”, the email should have the following information: name, email address, for what purpose the materials are needed (project, authority, etc.) and how long the datasets are needed for.
Addresses and additional information for the City of Espoo interface services can be found at https://kartat.espoo.fi/opendata/(external link, opens in a new window).
The attachment below (only in Finnish) contains descriptions of the nature datasets of interface services. There is also a listing of open datasets and datasets that require credentials.
The flying squirrel (Pteromys volans) is an endangered species and its breeding and resting places are protected under the EU Habitats Directive and the Finnish Nature Conservation Act. The flying squirrel must therefore be taken into account in all land use planning, and the protection of the flying squirrel can only be deviated from for special reasons. For more information on coordination between protection of the flying squirrel and land use planning, visit https://www.espoo.fi/en/flying-squirrel-espoo.
Information on the structure of the flying squirrel spatial data used by the City of Espoo can be obtained in the attachments below (only in Finnish). They provide guidance on how to fill in the information of the spatial data and describe how to classify the flying squirrel areas in Espoo into three different categories as a core area, a living area and a suitable area according to the expert's assessment. The categories of the flying squirrel areas have different constraints on land use and should be represented on maps so that the areas in different categories can be distinguished.
