Construction in Espoo

- Approximately 20,000 homes will be completed between 2026 and 2031.
- The master planning process is underway. The plan will provide guidelines for land use, transport and growth until 2060.
- Espoo aims to reach carbon neutrality by 2030. This is reflected, for example, in energy-efficient construction solutions.
Innovative Espoo
Espoo made it to the top six in the iCapital competition (European Capital of Innovation Awards) in 2019 and 2020. In 2022 and 2024, Espoo came in second.
Among all European cities, Espoo produces the fourth-highest number of patent applications (over 2,500 in 2025).
Espoo is one of the hundred cities participating in the EU Mission on Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030.

In 2023, there were about 138,000 jobs in Espoo. Between January and May 2024, there were approximately 116,000 jobs in companies in Espoo based on person-years.

In 2019 and 2020, Aalto Startup Center was ranked among the top five university-led business accelerators in the world. It is home to nearly 150 startups, accelerators and established partners.
