Suurpelto – a unique garden city

A wide range of commercial, cultural and recreational services can already be found in the area, and more will become available in the future.

A centre for commercial and other services is being developed in the heart of the growing Suurpelto area, near the Lukutori square, providing a meeting place for residents.

The shopping centre was opened in 2017. Commercial services will be further improved with the extension of the shopping centre and the construction of the central block in the near future. A planning reservation has been granted for the extension project. There are also several shops and services along the main street.

A wide range of recreational services are available to children, adults and senior citizens in Suurpelto. In the nearby Espoo Central Park, people can enjoy outdoor activities, such as skiing, orienteering, cycling and hiking. Suurpelto residents are active, and they are offered opportunities to participate in various projects. Local events and neighbourhood activities are also supported.

The Opinmäki campus is an excellent example of the future of public buildings. The campus is an active service centre and meeting place, also in the evenings and on weekends. The building features spaces for various needs, and they can be rented outside school hours.

Espoo International School is a joint comprehensive school operating in the campus area. The school provides education in English for more than 750 pupils in grades 1–9. The campus is also home to OIarin koulu, a Finnish-speaking school with 150 pupils in grades 1–4.

In addition, there is a day care centre and a modern, active learning library that is open to the public every day of the year. The sports hall is used for organising various international competitions, such as basketball and futsal tournaments. The sports hall is also the venue for Espoo’s annual Independence Day celebration for sixth-graders.

Suurpelto is currently being developed, and new services are being introduced in cooperation with local operators and residents. Development activities take into consideration the area’s proximity to nature, active lifestyles and ecological values.

Suurpelto has good public transport connections. Thanks to the public transport street completed in 2022, Matinkylä, Espoon keskus, Leppävaara and Tapiola can be reached directly by bus.

The trunk bus route 520 provides a direct and fast connection to both Matinkylä and Leppävaara. In the future, a light rail line running from Matinkylä to Leppävaara may further improve cross-town connections in Espoo. No decision on the construction of the light rail line has yet been made.

Commercial services are being developed in Suurpelto based on the local vision and values. The Suurpelto shopping centre and new commercial premises along the main street play a key role in Suurpelto’s final cityscape. The first phase of construction was completed in 2017. Supporting entrepreneurship and various activities in the area is an important part of development.

Several areas in Suurpelto are under development. A new residential area for about 1,000 people and a new school campus will be built in the Nygrannas area. The Vassholm-Henttaanmylly area will also have homes for about 1,000 residents. Furthermore, the Lakeamäki area will have homes for about 1,000 residents, a new school and day care centre, including a large sports park, as well as a small commercial area located near Turunväylä.
