Suurpelto – a unique garden city

Commercial, cultural and recreational services can already be found in the area, and will be built further in the future.

A centre for commercial and other services will rise in the vicinity of Lukutori Square in the most central place of the growing Suurpelto, forming the heart and meeting place of the area. The new, modern shopping centre was opened in 2017. The shopping centre has also good parking facilities to be used by shoppers and residents of the same block. Commercial services will be further improved with the extension of the shopping centre. A planning reservation has been granted for the extension project. The plan is to build a workplace and service area during the third phase. There are also several shops in the main street of Suurpelto.

A wide range of recreational services for kids, adults and senior citizens are available in Suurpelto. Outdoor activities such as skiing, orienteering, biking and hiking can be done in the nearby Espoo Central Park. Suurpelto inhabitants are active and this is being supported by offering them the chance to participate in different projects, to support events and current affairs.

The Opinmäki campus is a great example of the future of public building projects. The campus is an active service centre and meeting place, also in the evenings and on weekends. Anyone can rent different facilities in the building outside school hours. It is possible to rent different kind of rooms denpending on one’s needs. 

Espoo International School is a joint comprehensive school operating in the campus area. The school provides education in English for more than 750 pupils in grades 1–9. OIarin koulu, a Finnish-speaking school with 150 pupils in grades 1–3, is also located in Opinmäki. 

In addition, there is a day care centre and a modern active learning library that is open to the public every day of the year. The sports hall is used for organising various international competitions, including basketball and futsal tournaments. The sports hall is also the venue for Espoo’s annual Independence Day celebration for sixth-graders.

Suurpelto is currently being developed and new services are being employed together with local operators and inhabitants. The area is being developed with closeness to nature, active lifestyle and ecological values in mind.

The Suurpelto area has good public transport connections. Thanks to the public transport street completed in 2022, all Espoo’s urban centres can be reached by bus.

The trunk bus route 520 provides direct and fast access to both Matinkylä and Leppävaara. In the future, a light rail line will run from Matinkylä to Leppävaara, improving cross-town connections in Espoo.

Commercial services are also being developed according to local values and vision. The Suurpelto shopping centre and new commercial services on the main street is a significant part of Suurpelto’s final cityscape. The first phase of the construction was completed in 2017. Supporting entrepreneurship and activity in the area are important development areas.
