Otaniemi – a unique innovation hub

Otaniemi is undergoing major changes and will eventually be developed into a small city.

The Aalto University metro station in Otaniemi serves as a gateway to an expanding Aalto University campus. Most of the university’s operations were located here in 2021. Otaniemi’s traffic connections will improve even further once the Jokeri Light Rail Line starts running. The Jokeri Light Rail will start operating, at the latest, in early 2024, but preparations are being made as part of the construction project and in terms of tram deliveries and driver training to enable an earlier start in the autumn of 2023. It is expected that the decision on the start of operation will be made during the summer 2023. There will be three Jokeri Light Rail Line stops in Otaniemi.

Otaniemi is undergoing significant development. New homes, workplaces and premises for Aalto University are being built in the area. The areas along the Jokeri Light Rail route are being developed. New student housing will be built along Otakaari.

Otaniemi and Keilaniemi area forms a unique innovation cluster.  A variety of cultural experiences within walking distance in Tapiola enrich this scientific and economic concentration.

Currently some 3,800 people reside in the Otaniemi‒Keilaniemi area and the population is expected to grow to 15,000 by 2050.

Distance from Helsinki Central Railway Station to Otaniemi is 11 minutes by metro.
