People and nature live side by side in a nature-wise city
Espoo aims to take care of biodiversity as the city grows and develops. This is a great challenge to which we will respond with long-term work. Through Nature-Wise Espoo work, we secure and increase biodiversity in Espoo increasingly better.
Espoo aims to achieve a state of no net loss of biodiversity by 2035. It is a state where human activity does not decrease biodiversity or the benefits of nature to humans.
The objectives and development measures have been compiled into a roadmap, which will be published in 2024. We will generate more data, specify plans and develop operating methods until 2035.

Good practices, development and cooperation
Nature-wise Espoo is an expansive entity. During the work, we do things such as
- enhance Espoo’s current practices with which the city is planned and biodiversity is nurtured
- develop new operating methods and tools to take nature values into account
- determine which natural sites in Espoo would benefit from restorative measures and what kinds of measures would be related to this.
The pursuit of no net loss of biodiversity is a new objective, even internationally. Compared to other cities, Espoo is at the forefront of achieving the goal. Participating in research projects and learning more about other cities’ practices and development work results is important.
Preserving biodiversity is a huge challenge and the city cannot do it alone. That is why we are inviting the whole Espoo community – the residents, associations, businesses and landowners – to participate.
