Water quality in swimming pools
Espoo Region Environmental Health Services monitors the water quality in swimming pools in Espoo, Kauniainen and Kirkkonummi. The area has a total of nine public swimming pools, one spa, and 16 other pool facilities intended for public use, for example in hotels and gyms. Pool operators are responsible for the safety of their pools and the quality of the water.
We regularly monitor the water quality in these pools. Water samples are collected based on visitor numbers and tested for, among other things, bacteria, chlorine, and pH levels. Each location’s latest test results are available in the pool area or on a notice board.
Pool operators must submit a notification under the Health Protection Act before starting swimming pool or spa operations, making significant changes to them, or changing the operator. This also applies to individual pools intended for public use.
We do not routinely monitor rental hot tubs, wading pools, or private pools owned by housing companies or individuals. The owners are responsible for maintaining the water quality and hygiene of their pools.
What to do if you become ill from pool water
Although we regularly only monitor public pool facilities, we conduct inspections and water sampling in other pool facilities if a health hazard is suspected. If you suspect that pool water has caused illness or other harm:
- submit a report via the Ilppa service,(external link, opens in a new window) or
- contact the pool water monitoring team of Espoo Region Environmental Health Services at uimavesivalvonta@espoo.fi.
