The history of the museum

The museum building of the Lagstad School Museum is the former teacher’s residence of Espoo’s first municipal elementary school, Lagstad folkskola.

Espoo’s first municipal elementary school, Lagstad folkskola, opened in 1873. Schooling continued there until the end of the spring term in 1954, when a new school building was completed nearby.

The old Lagstad schoolhouse has been restored to resemble its appearance during the elementary school era. The building now houses the local heritage house Lagstad hembygdsgård, run by the Esbo hembygdsförening.

The idea of a school museum was already part of Espoo’s plans in the 1960s, when school‑related objects and other materials began to be collected in museum’s collections. In 2003, the Lagstad School Museum was opened to the public on the upper floor of the old school building, where it remained until 2021.

After this, the facilities and activities of the Lagstad School Museum were renewed. The new museum was designed together with Espoo residents in various workshops and events during 2025. The renewed School Museum opened in the former teacher’s residence of Lagstad School in February 2026.

At the Lagstad School Museum, visitors can explore how people in Espoo have learned throughout different eras and reflect on their own school days. The museum offers various workshops and events for both the public and groups. Group visitors may also explore the museum independently and use its facilities for gatherings.

Since every visitor is the best expert on their own learning journey, everyone is welcome to enrich the museum’s content with their own memories. The exhibition can always be complemented with both old and new stories and experiences of learning. Perhaps you would like to share your story as well?
