Why does politics so often feel like nothing more than appearances?

What happens to democracy when polarization grows stronger?

And what kind of political discussion do we need before elections – and after them?

Author Yannick Lahti will join us directly from the Helsinki Book Fair to discuss his latest books, Farewell to Democracy (2026) and Prisoners of the Surface of Politics (2024). The event begins with an interview conducted by Mikko Lievonen, focusing on the origins of the books, the phenomena behind them, and why it is especially important right now to critically examine the state of democracy, politics, and public debate.

Following the interview, the conversation will expand into a panel discussion exploring the spirit of politics as elections approach. How does political discourse change during election campaigns, and what does that reveal about our democracy? Can disagreement once again become constructive, or are we becoming prisoners of political appearances? These and other questions will be discussed by Yannick Lahti, Mikko Lievonen, and Ella Immonen.

The Reading Circle event is open to everyone interested in politics, democracy, books, and public debate, regardless of political affiliation.

After the event, Yannick Lahti will remain on site for a short time to sign books. Please bring your copy if you would like to receive the author's signature.

A warm welcome to all!
