The photography exhibition ‘Through the Eyes of the Gyrfalcon’ shows, from a falcon’s viewpoint, how climate change affects nature, livelihoods and local people’s lives in the north. The exhibition is on display at Nature House Villa Elfvik from 9 September to 8 October 2026.

What will Lapland look like in the coming decades as it warms by 4 to 5 degrees over the next 50 years compared to the pre-industrial era?

The changes in nature are already occurring so rapidly that, within a single human generation, bare fells become covered by young forests, crystal-clear lakes turn brown and murky, and instead of salmonid fish, catches increasingly consist of cyprinids, perch and pike.

In the north, the effects of climate change are already visible both in nature and in people’s everyday lives. Winters have become milder and extreme frosts are less frequent than before. This exhibition offers a bird’s-eye view of these changes.

The exhibition ‘Through the Eyes of the Gyrfalcon – The Northern Region in the Grips of a Changing Climate’ brings together the impacts of climate change across Northern Norway and Finnish and Swedish Lapland. The exhibition combines powerful photographs with scientific information.

The exhibition has mainly been on display in Northern Finland, but it has also been developed into a virtual exhibition, which complements and expands on the themes explored in the physical exhibition.

The exhibition is part of the Finnish Environment Institute’s project Mitigating the impacts of climate change on biodiversity in the Barents Region, and it was put together with experts and researchers from Finland, Sweden and Norway. The exhibition was created in cooperation with the Ministry of the Environment and funded by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.

Nature House Villa Elfvik is open in September Mon–Fri 9:00–16:00 and Sat–Sun 10:00–16:00. In October, the Nature House is open Mon–Fri 9:00–15:00 and on Sundays 10:00–16:00. Admission to the Nature House and the exhibition is free.
