Although it may feel today as though we live in a constant flood of images, this has not always been the case. During the Middle Ages, people are estimated to have seen only about five images in their lifetime. Today, we are "bombarded" with images from every direction, and we do not necessarily stop to think about what we are seeing. Yet everyone remembers the images that are meaningful to them: a photograph of a firstborn child in their mother's arms, a picture of a graduation certificate, or a photo of an impressive public artwork encountered while travelling abroad.
The Espoo Artists' Guild is organizing a Pecha Kucha event where professionals from the visual arts field will present images from their own lives and artistic practices. Through these images, it is possible to reflect on how even creative professionals stand on one another's shoulders and how other people's images have influenced their work. The "Images of My Life" Pecha Kucha event aims to explore whether common themes can be found among the images that have shaped different professionals in the field, or whether the idea of a shared artistic identity is merely a myth. The presentations will take place in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, and audience members will have the opportunity to participate in an Open Mic-style question-and-answer session after the presentations.
The speakers are Krista Mikkola (curator), Leena Hoppania (Head of Cultural Services, City of Espoo), Sini Majuri (glass artist), Heidi Linsen (textile artist), Kirsi-Marja Moberg (poet and visual artist), and Antti Minkkinen (painter).
Pecha Kucha is a presentation format designed to showcase creative work in an accessible and informal way. Its purpose is to keep presentations concise, maintain a high level of audience engagement, and provide an opportunity for multiple presenters to exchange ideas during a single evening. Speakers and topics are selected well in advance, and the length and format of each presentation are clearly defined.
Pecha Kucha on thursday 27th of August at 5-7 pm
