2 October, Sointi Jazz Orchestra: Poems and Letters

Sointi Jazz Orchestra is known for its carefully curated concert programmes and open-minded attitude to new music. Since 2013, the band has delighted audiences with numerous interesting premieres, both on its own and in collaboration with leading Finnish and international soloists.

Poems and Letters is a concert work composed by Oskari Siirtola for Sointi Jazz Orchestra and a vocalist. It explores the nature of artistic life in the early modernist period, around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, through the writings of prominent visual artists of the era. The lyrics feature excerpts from letters, poems and other writings by, among others, Vincent van Gogh, Ellen Thesleff and Egon Schiele.

Musically, Poems and Letters combines modern jazz with influences drawn from both art music and popular music. Rich tones, multidimensional textures and the spontaneous energy of jazz improvisation reflect the modernists’ liberated use of colour and bold artistic expression.

The vocalist is the rising Finnish jazz star, singer and composer Selma Savolainen, whose album Horror Vacui won the Emma Award for Best Jazz Album in 2024.

Poems and Letters premiered in autumn 2025.

The route to the main entrance

The drop-off point for passenger traffic is approximately 20 meters from the main entrance. The surface leading to the main entrance is even.

The main entrance

The entrance stands out clearly and is illuminated. There is a canopy above the entrance.
The doors connected to the entrance stand out clearly and the glass doors have contrast markings. Outside the door there is sufficient room for moving e.g. with a wheelchair. The door opens automatically with a motion sensor.

In the facility

The customer service point has three floors.
For moving around, there is a lift, which can hold a wheelchair; the door opens automatically. The floor numbers in the lift can be felt with fingers. (The minimum dimensions for an accessible lift are width 1.1 m and depth 1.4 m.)
The doors in the facility stand out clearly. The glass doors have contrast markings.
The facility has an accessible toilet on the entrance floor.
There is a second accessible toilet on floor -1.
There is a third accessible toilet on floor 2.
