Drawing her strength from strong emotions and dark themes, ethno pop artist Vilma Jää updates folk music in her unique way. In this combination of traditional instruments and a synthetic beat, the Finno-Ugric vocal tradition meets modern pop aesthetics.
Her role as a folk singer in Kaija Saariaho’s opera Innocence brought international fame to Jää, and her album Kosto (2023) cemented her position in the top ranks of Finnish music. The album received the Ethno of the Year award at Emma gala and the Folk music record of the year award at Eläköön FOLK! gala. Vilma's unique voice and bold expression create an atmosphere stretching from respect for traditions to creative experimentation.
The first act of the evening will be artist, musician and music maker Leija Lautamaja. Lautamaja's instruments are the diatonic accordion and harmonium. Her musical roots extend from Southern Ostrobothnian folk music traditions and the spirit of rock 'n' roll that was strong in the small villages of Alavus.
Duration 2 h, incl. intermission
