“Shepherd, bring your flock over here; the grass is finer in the field here”, the shepherds call to one another in Canteloube’s Baïlèro. Rooted in folk music, the Auvergnelais songs are sunshine and rural love from the highlands of central France, captured in a richly resonant form. During the pandemic, Tapiola Sinfonietta recorded a selection of these radiant songs with star soprano Carolyn Sampson, but now they will finally be performed live. The songs are introduced by Schubert’s charming Rosamunde Overture. Beethoven faced many hardships in his life, but the Fate Symphony reveals the attitude needed to overcome them. The work’s famous four-note motif became a symbol of victory in World War II when transcribed into Morse code.
