John Blow’s (1649–1708) opera Venus and Adonis performed in Finland for the first time!
John Blow’s (1649–1708) opera Venus and Adonis, believed to be performed in Finland for the first time, tells the story of the goddess Venus and her love for the mortal Adonis. Composed in 1683 for the court of King Charles II, it is considered the oldest known opera in the English language. Venus and Adonis is rooted in the masque tradition that was popular in 17th-century England. Blow’s only opera is filled with charm, beauty, and dance-like elegance, while also carrying a powerful emotional charge. The performance is part of the Espoo Baroque Festival.
