The course is intended for school-aged children, aged 7–13, who are interested in sailing and boating. Participants must be able to swim, as capsizing and swimming are part of dinghy sailing. Children who can swim 25 meters continuously in a swimming pool are considered proficient swimmers for the course. The camp is held at Espoon Pursiseura in Nuottaniemi, Espoo.

Beginners' course

The basics of sailing are taught on the water through a variety of exercises, games, and fun activities. You will learn how to handle a dinghy without even noticing, and soon you will be in control of the boat. Exercises are carried out on the shore, in the classroom, in the club's surroundings, and, of course, on the water in the archipelago. The course also includes practice in capsizing and righting the dinghy. There is no need to worry about capsizing in advance, and nothing is compulsory. The course is taught in Finnish, but instruction is also available in English if necessary.

Dinghy sailing

Sailing skills are practiced on the club's Optimist dinghies. During the beginner's course, you will learn the basics of sailing, such as preparing the boat for sailing, leaving the shore, basic sailing skills, and returning to shore. You will learn how to use the rudder to steer, the sheet to adjust the sail and speed, and how to make a counter turn (venda) and a jibe (jiippi).

Boating skills

The boating section of the course covers the basics of navigation and safe boating, such as recognizing maritime signals, navigating according to them, and boating.
