Matti Johannes Koivu is firmly among the ranks of Finland's strongest singer-songwriters. He is known as an artist who does not hesitate to bring his emotions into his music.
In addition to eight solo albums, Koivu has released a children's music album and four albums as a member of the band Ultramariini. Koivu first came to the attention of the general public with his cover versions of songs performed by Irwin Goodman.
In addition to his own work, Koivu has also written songs and lyrics for other artists, including Vesa-Matti Loiri and Lassi Valtonen. Koivu's music is influenced by folk and beat music, among other genres.
Matti Johannes Koivu is passionate about live performances: "The durability of music is weighed in front of a live audience. I love the challenge of live performance; how exciting and terrifying it is, and how music at its best liberates the performer and the audience."
In recent years, Matti Johannes Koivu has expanded his role as a musician. He has produced three radio documentary series for Yleisradio on history and understanding it. The latest of these was broadcast in the summer of 2019. As a musician, Matti Johannes Koivu has previously released eight solo albums and four albums as a member of the band Ultramariini. Koivu has been nominated for an Emma award for both his solo album Toisen maailman nimi and Ultramariini's album Ydin.
