Maurice Ravel: Ma Mère l’Oye, orchestral suite

Louise Farrenc: Symphony no. 3 in G minor op. 36

Unique and startling architecture is commonly known as ‘wow’ architecture, and ‘wow’ could equally well apply to the music of French composer Guillaume Connesson. His Flute Concerto no. 2 is subtitled Dances concertantes, and these dances ecstatically break down style and genre boundaries. The Tapiola Sinfonietta is one of the co-commissioners of this exciting new work; the soloist is Emily Beynon, Principal Flute of the Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam. Ravel adapted some of the traditional ‘Mother Goose’ stories into a fairytale ballet where princesses, gnomes and monsters come alive in an Impressionist magic garden. A century earlier, Louise Farrenc was one of France’s leading symphonic composers. The guest conductor at this concert is Eugene Tzigane, Chief Conductor of the Kuopio Symphony Orchestra.

Pre-concert talk 18:10-18:30.
