Known for her unprejudiced music-making and impressive voice, Selma Savolainen will present her Horror Vacui sextet at Sello Hall.

Selma Savolainen has won accolades such as the Pori Jazz Rising Talent award, and Helsingin Sanomat praised her as a singer who has raised Finnish vocal jazz to a new level. Sung in English, her songs are influenced by not only modern jazz but also an alternative singer-songwriter style. In addition to Savolainen, the sextet features top musicians from the Finnish jazz scene: Tomi Nikku (trumpet), Max Zenger (clarinet), Toomas Keski-Säntti (piano), Eero Tikkanen (double bass) and Okko Saastamoinen (drums).

The band’s self-titled debut album was released in May 2023 by the UK-based Whirlwind Recordings, a top label in contemporary jazz. Selma Savolainen has composed and arranged the music specifically for the sextet. Referring to the name of the band, the series of songs deals with the fear of emptiness, abandonment and surprising discoveries.
