Antti Tikkanen, violin and leader
Lilja Haatainen, violin

Jean Sibelius (1865-1957): Water Droplets for violin and cello
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Symphony no. 1 in E flat major, KV16
Peter Tchaikovsky: Souvenir d’un lieu cher op. 42
Nino Rota: Dances for small orchestra
Marzi Nyman: New work, world premiere

Mozart was only eight years old when, in London, he wrote his First Symphony. In its second movement, we find a glimpse of the theme that would reappear in his last work in this genre, the ‘Jupiter’ Symphony. Nino Rota is remembered for his film music, some hints of which may be found in the dances he wrote in his early twenties. Tchaikovsky fled to Nadezhda von Meck’s farm in Brailov to escape his disastrous marriage, and in gratitude he wrote Souvenir d’un lieu cher for this ‘dear place’. Lilja Haatainen may have similarly fond memories of Weimar, where she won the International Louis Spohr Violin Competition at the age of 11 in 2022. Marzi Nyman, a native of Espoo, had a musically colourful childhood, memories of which he will share in his new work.

The concert forms part of the programme of the Youth Festival.

Pre-discussion in Tapiola Hall at 18:00: Youth researchers, professor Sofia Laine and professor emerita Helena Helve, introduce the discussion by telling about their research on youth.
