Tapiola Sinfonietta Chloé Dufresne, conductor Anni Haapaniemi, oboeAlbert Roussel: Orchestra suite from the ballet Le festin de l’araignée Ross Edwards: Oboe Concerto ‘Bird Spirit Dreaming’, Finnish premiere Ville Aslak Raasakka: The Harvest, premier of the orchestral version Jean Sibelius: The Tempest Suite no. 2 op. 109/3In Albert Roussel’s suite from the dance work Le festin de l’araignée, a web spreads over the garden while the unsuspecting insects argue over apples. Australian composer Ross Edwards casts the oboe as a solitary bird crying in the wilderness, performed by Anni Haapaniemi with a costume to fit the part, reminding us of the multitude of relationships between humans and nature. Harvest time is a common theme in music, but in Ville Aslak Raasakka’s The Harvest we hear forest harvesters churning up the forest into a bleak and bare landscape. Sibelius’s incidental music to The Tempest presents natural forces as a metaphor for the tumult in the human mind.
