Ludwig van Beethoven: Coriolanus Overture op. 62

Beethoven’s Coriolanus Overture reflects the tale of a renegade Roman soldier who leads the Volscians against Rome but eventually sacrifices himself to prevent the mass murder of civilians. Caroline Shaw is a wide-ranging composer who has collaborated for instance with rap artist Kanye West, but her Watermark draws inspiration from Beethoven’s Piano Concerto no. 3, specifically the watermarks in the music paper that allow it to be accurately dated. The Sixth Symphony (1822) of Ferdinand Ries, friend and assistant to Beethoven is a crossing of paths, with Turkish instruments spicing up the finale.
