WHAT IS YOUR VISION OF A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE IN ESPOO IN 204O?

There are many answers to this question, as many as there are people in Espoo (other participants are also welcome). This is why we want to involve as many people with different backgrounds as possible in the collaborative planning of desirable futures. Through co-creation, we can enrich our visions of the future and also understand the perspectives of others. In the exhibition, we do not aim to find the best solution but instead create alternative perspectives for the current, often gloomy visions of the future. Envisioning the future is important because in order to realise desirable futures, we must first be able to imagine them.

The exhibition is part of the master’s thesis of design student Marika Taipalus and it was commissioned by the City of Espoo. Discussion starters have been created in the exhibition space as a starting point for envisioning and speculating about the future. The materials produced are partly based on the workshops held during the City of Espoo’s Future Workshop for Sustainable Development (TUPA) project. The project develops and tests a new model of resident inclusion, in which a number of residents from different backgrounds resolve sustainability challenges together with the city’s operators. This exhibition aims to encourage wider debate on the sustainability themes discussed in the workshops. The material produced by the visitors is collected anonymously for research purposes.

Themes of TUPA workshops: 1. Sustainable development goals, 2. Biodiversity and local nature, 3. Circular economy and sustainable living 4. Energy and transport 5. Sustainable urban planning 6. Food 7. Socio-cultural sustainability.

Note that the presented visions of the future do not necessarily represent the city of Espoo’s views on desirable futures.
