Accordion talent Maria Kalaniemi and pianist Timo Alakotila are amongst the pioneers of new Finnish folk music. Over the years, their collaboration has turned into a seamless musical alliance. The concert includes the duo’s own compositions, as well as Maria and Timo’s fresh new arrangements of Finnish and Finnish-Swedish songs, minuets, polskas, polkas, and tangos.
Maria Kalaniemi became widely known in 1983 after winning the first Gold Accordion competition in Ikaalinen. Over the past three decades, Kalaniemi has had a major career in modernising public views about the accordion and the music that can be played with it, both in Finland and abroad.
Timo Alakotila graduated from Helsinki’s Pop & Jazz Conservatory in 1992, majoring in composition. His extensive works include concertos, countless arrangements, music dramas, and dance performances, to name a few.
