Schubert matured as a composer in Vienna, which was in the throes of Rossini fever at the time. These influences found their way into Schubert’s Italian Overture, albeit with a dose of Schubertian melancholy to tone down the Italian temperament.
Many clarinettists are friends with bassoonists, and clarinettist Crusell welcomed one as his son-in-law. In 1829, he wrote his daughter’s husband a Concertino, which that bassoon virtuoso, embarking on a tour of Europe, referred to as his ‘war horse’.
Ferdinand Ries wrote his Fourth Symphony in 1822. Its flowing musical idiom incorporates clear references to Rossini, one of the most popular composers of the day.
Pre-concert talk at 6 pm.
Concert ends ca. 8.15 pm
The Ries cycle continues in the 2023–2024 season.
